Website Maintenance

Website Maintenance
Question: What is WordPress Website Maintenance & Why Do I Need It?

This is a great question!

WordPress is what is called a Content Management System – or CMS for short. Its job is to help you manage all of the content you want to share with your website visitors. WordPress is so good at what it does that it is #1 in the world.

However, being software, it is constantly improved and fixed by developers tasked with this responsibility. That’s where the Maintenance part of what we do at Idea To Growth LLC comes into play.

  • We watch for all of these changes. When they happen, we review the changes, then implement them into your “copy” of WordPress and ensure that your website continues to work as you intended.

But, it’s not just the WordPress CMS that needs maintenance.

  • Every website runs a lot of other software – called Plugins – that gives your website all those features that you love.
  • Plugins do all sorts of wonderful things for your website. Some plugins perform website security functions to help keep both you and your visitors safe.
  • Other plugins provide those easy-to-use Social Media buttons so that your visitors can easily share pages of your websites with their friends.
  • Still, other plugins help make your website pages open on your visitor’s computers, tablets, and mobile devices as fast as possible.

All of this software requires regular review and maintenance to be sure that it keeps working properly.

This is why your website needs our Website Maintenance Service.

Website Maintenance Features

WP (WORDPRESS) CORE UPDATES

WordPress is the CMS (Content Management System) that we use for our client websites.

The CMS is what holds and manages all of the text and images. In more common terms, you can think of it as the database.

WordPress gets regular updates from the consortium of people and firms that create and manage the WordPress software. Each time there is an update, we evaluate and install the updates and ensure that your website still works as expected.

WP (WORDPRESS) THEME UPDATES

WordPress is the CMS (Content Management System) that we use for our client websites.

We do not use Website Themes that contain pre-made page layouts with images, text boxes, etcetera. We only build Full-Custom Website Designs.

However, to easily manage the colors and fonts used in our Full-Custom Website Designs, we use a simple Fonts & Colors Theme called “Hello”.

The Hello Theme gets regular updates. Each time there is an update, we evaluate and install the update and ensure that your website still works as expected.

WP (WORDPRESS) PLUGIN UPDATES

WordPress is the CMS (Content Management System) that we use for our client websites.

To cost-effectively create all of the website features, we use software from several third-party software vendors. These software apps are generally referred to as “Plugins.”

Each Plugin gets regular updates. Each time there is an update, we evaluate and install the update and ensure that your website still works as expected.

DATABASE OPTIMIZATION

The WordPress Database contains all of the information related to the content of your website.

As time goes by, information inside the database becomes outdated. This is due to updates to both the text and images and the Plugins and WordPress software.

Every month, we run a process that checks your database for old, unneeded items and cleans them out. This makes your website run faster. Faster is always good for your Google Ranking.

PAGE 404 (PAGE NOT FOUND)

Page 404 is the web message for “Page Not Found”.

A webpage not appearing is most often caused by a “broken link.

Hyperlinks are the URL the internet uses to find each of your web pages or the web pages of others that you have linked to in your blog posts or other web pages.

When anyone changes the URL to any web page, your website needs to be updated to reflect that change or your visitors will get the dreaded Page 404 error screen..”

To uncover any Page 404 alerts, we run monthly broken link scans. If any Page 404 flags are found, they are immediately removed.

Each month we run a process that checks each of our client’s websites for these broken links and fix any broken links we find.

FAQ

FAQ

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we get.

“Website Maintenance” is the work related to keeping your website running as good (or better) than on the first day that you launched it.

Every day that goes by, developers find “better ways to code” websites. They find “bugs” in their code that needs to be fixed. The WordPress Core gets updated. Plugins get updated. Google, Safari, Explorer update their browser and change something in their code. Suddenly something on your website quits working or visually “looks weird” and your web developer needs to go in and change your website in order to get everything working right. All of these things fall under what we call “Website Maintenance”.

What happens if you don’t have regular maintenance on your website? Nothing good. Your website “breaks” and now your clients don’t see what you want them to see on your website. A broken website gives the impression of a “broken business”. You know what we mean. Do you want to go visit a business whose website looks “broken”? That business looks like they don’t care about their website. Maybe they won’t care much about their customers either?

Every website is made up of millions of lines of software code.

The companies that write this code regularly update their code to fix bugs, add features, add security.

The software used to build and run your website comes from dozens of companies.

This means nearly every day we get update to the software running your website. We have to evaluate each update to be sure it works and, most importantly, “plays nice” with all the other software.

This is a big part of our job in running your website and accounts for most of the monthly Hosting, Maintenance, Security and Support fee that you pay us.

Theoretically Yes. From a practical standpoint No.

It take a lot of skill on both managing the Website Hosting Server and all of the software that makes up your site. It takes years of training to become competent. Even more years to become a professional.

Your time is better spent growing your business revenue than maintaining your website.

Our Website Maintenance covers maintaining the webserver and all the software that runs your website.

Our Website Support covers the layout of your website, the website pages themselves. 1-2 simple changes (change text, images) are covered. Larger changes (new pages, major design changes) are quoted on a per job or hourly basis.
